Learn more about the world cup:
Here's the place to learn a little more about the 2014 FIFA World Cup and why we chose this as our litter theme. All the orange texts are links to fun videos, or articles to learn more. Check it out!
The FIFA World Cup is one of the world's premier sporting events, drawing soccer/football fans and spectators, and let's not forget the hooligans from all over the world to watch the best players vie it out for the championship. It is estimated that approximately 715 Million people watch the World Cup from over 200 countries! The World Cup only happens every four years so it's exciting to be having puppies right as the World gears up to celebrate this sporting event. The first games kick off on June 12th, at which time the pups will be about 8 weeks old. Here is the World Cup schedule.
These puppies' fun first names are after World Cup players from different nations. We welcomed Reina (Jose Reina from Spain), Thiago (Thiago Silva from Brazil), Jozy (Jozy Altidore of the USA), Rooney (Wayne Rooney from England), and Song (Alex Song from Cameroon). The pups' official UKC/AKC registered names will be after nicknames of the national teams. For example, the US National team's nickname is the "Stars and Stripes" so Jozy's registered name will be "Silvertree's Stars and Stripes."
FIFA is the world Federation (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) that owns and promotes the World Cup events, and was started in 1904. Much like the Olympics, a different country is selected to host the World Cup every four years. In 2010, it was held in South Africa, and now in 2014 the tournament will take place in Brazil. There is much fanfare, promotion, and marketing associated with the World Cup and is always very specific to the host country. We have adopted the themes, colors and spirit of this year's World Cup as we planned for all the fun puppy names and materials.

2014 FIFA World Cup Fun Stuff:
Slogan: "All in or nothing"
Mascot: "Fuleco" the armadillo. Yes, we bought a plush Fuleco for the puppies :)
Official Ball: the Brazuca (meaning "inherently Brazilian"). The care taken to design the official match ball is astounding - not only in the engineering of the construction for maximum play, touch and feel for the players, but how the ball is likely to react on the field. There was some controversy at the 2010 World Cups that the ball designed was too unpredictable on the field, and the players were unable to have a good handle on it. We'll see what kind of controversy the Brazuca ball incurs this time. Adidas (headquartered in our home town of Portland, OR) has designed the Brazuca ball. There's some fun promotional videos featuring cameras implanted in the Brazuca ball - the "Brazucam."
Interestingly, the design of the Brazuca incorporates a Brazilian tradition of the "Bahia Band" or "Fitas" - they are colorful wish bands that are worn on the wrist and are said to grant the wearer's wishes. A friend will tie the wish band on the wearer's wrist with three knots, at each knot the wearer makes a wish and when the band wears off or breaks, your wishes will come true. The colorful lines all throughout the Brazuca ball displays this wish band tradition, and we have purchased wish bands for the World Cup puppies. We also have a mini Brazuca ball for the puppies to roll around.
Instrument: The "Caxirola" - Each World Cup has a specific instrument for fans and spectators to "play" during matches. The "Vuvuzela" was notorious at the 2010 World Cup for being way too loud and distracting in the stadiums, and it was certainly obnoxious over the TV.
Kits: "Kits" are the uniforms or outfits that the National teams have specifically made for the World Cup. Each Nation generally has one "home" kit and one "away" kit designed. Some Nations get a bit excited (full of themselves?) and have additional kits made. The kits usually represent the National team's color, style, and and logos. Kits are big business for sports apparel companies - usually Nike, Adidas, or Puma are the primary kit designers. All the World Cup business generates an estimated $2 BILLION in revenue for both Nike and Adidas. It's a big deal!
